With close to two decades of experience in human-centered design, ethnographic research, usability engineering, and interactive digital strategy, I have dedicated my career to humanizing digital products and services while crafting transformative, end-to-end user experiences. Working beside top-level executives, product managers, marketing directors, business analysts, developers, and other designers, I pride myself on unapologetically advocating for the people who use such technologies every day: injecting empathy into the core of every system and user interface that I help architect.
Growing up in Portland, Oregon, I was surrounded by creative energy and aesthetic beauty. I also was fortunate enough to spend a decade in Cambridge, Massachusetts: a vibrant, intellectually stimulating, and eclectic urban community that is full of diverse cultures and exciting new ideas. There is no doubt that these environments have had a huge impact on the way I see the world and the way that I view technology. As I proudly return to the Pacific Northwest, I am excited to begin an entirely new mission: empower people with tools that allow them to take back control of the social technologies they use every day. Speaking as an optimist and relentless optimizer, I firmly reject the dystopian futures that some have imagined for our society. I am convinced that technology can still be built to engender meaningful relationships, enhance lives, spread joy, boost self esteem, encourage passionate creativity, drive rabid curiosity, facilitate understanding, and resurrect a thriving, cooperative public sphere. As Special Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks famously said, “We live inside a dream.” However, this dream need not be dominated by the regrets of the past or the fears of the future. We can ascend beyond such paralyzing distractions and learn to reintegrate our dreams into the present. Politicians always talk about a brighter tomorrow, but perhaps it is time to turn our full attention to today. Only in the here and now, can we engage in truth, reality, interaction, and meaningful activity. This is what Presence is all about and I cannot wait to help bring this beautiful dream to life!
