Ultimately, though the technology is exciting and I have a knack for applying it to business problems, I find meaning in life beyond the keyboard and screens. My cherished family and friends are my top priority. And I am also a student and practitioner of nature-based spirituality. I know that the alarming rise of mental health issues due to over-use of social and digital media is mostly avoidable by simply pressing the off switch and going out frequently into the natural world. Yet, the technologies that deliver the content to our screens are becoming ever more adept at figure us out, learning our psychological ticks and neurochemical hooks such that we do not reach for that off switch even though we know it is in our best interest to do so. We stand at a precarious point, where the incredible tools we have created may put us on an unstoppable treadmill of binge consumption, vacuous excitation, depression, and isolation unless we find ways to turn those tools to our service rather than exploitation. The mission of Presence is to help a growing community of technologists for wellness turn the tide in our favor. I am very excited to be a part of this growing movement in high tech.
